Super 8mm, Standard 8mm & 16mm Film
Photographic film is affected by relative humidity, temperature, light, chemical contamination and of course its age.
Most Standard 8mm and 16mm film today is considered to be late middle aged and in many cases is starting to decompose. This is often evident when the film starts producing a pungent vinegar like smell. Film will also begin to shrink, buckle and become brittle making it impossible to project without tearing and destroying the film.
Super 8mm which came out in 1965 is generally found to still be in good condition if stored correctly. As with all film it should be converted to DVD to capture the original colours before they begin to fade.
These family memories should not be ignored but be enjoyed by family and friends and ultimately passed on for future generations to be able to reflect back on their family history.
